U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) restores the implementation of the Fair Housing Act’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) requirement. Trump halted the rule in an attempt to eliminate protections guaranteed by the 1968 Fair Housing Act, followed with a tweet “I am happy to inform all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream that you will no longer be bothered or financially hurt by having low income housing built in your neighborhood.”
Trumps move made it easier for communities to segregate based on race. Secretary Marcia L. Fudge, under President Biden’s direction, announced that HUD published an interim final rule on Thursday to restore the implementation of the Fair Housing Act’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) requirement.
In addition to fighting housing discrimination, the Fair Housing Act requires HUD and its funding recipients, local communities, to also take affirmative steps to remedy fair housing issues such as racially segregated neighborhoods, lack of housing choice, and unequal access to housing-related opportunities.
The interim final rule will go into effect on July 31, 2021. Elections matter. Biden is keeping his promise on Fair Housing and we are for it. If you need more info…Askhollingsworth.
