Westchester is Hot!!! The temperature outside is currently 99 degrees and the real estate market is hotter than that! The Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors pronounced a perfect storm of market forces—strong buyer demand, low interest rates, soaring housing costs in New York City and a vibrant local economy that is helping to propel residential home sales in the four-county market area of the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors to a five-year high.
According to the 2016 Second Quarter Residential Real Estate Sales Report Westchester closed 19.9% more transactions than a year earlier. Westchester County’s median single-family home price is now $650,000.
So I decided to cool it now (New Edition Voice) with a trip to some of Westchester’s best Ice Cream Spots.
Mount Vernon Ice Cream Factory, Mount Vernon NY specializes in Grape-Nuts ice cream (which is popular in the Caribbean and parts of New England). The store’s many Grape-Nuts flavors include Jamaican rum raisin, pumpkin, and soursoup.
Penny Lick Ice Cream Company cart at the Hastings or Irvington farmers' market are dishing out licorice, made with organic black licorice, star anise, and vanilla bean, and Ethiopian macchiato (inspired by a trip to Addis Ababa), made with Yirgacheffe coffee beans and dark chocolate.
Paleteria Fernandez in Port Chester & Mamaroneck are all about paletas (ice pops, either water or milk based), in flavors ranging from pico de gallo, whole pecan (and don’t miss their frozen chocolate-covered bananas covered in nuts). But they also make ice cream, including one based on chongos, a Mexican dessert made with curdled milk, sugar, and cinnamon.
Check out Westchester Magazine’s blog about these cool Westchester ice cream spots. They probably won’t cool down the hot summer real estate market, but they will make a trip to your next open house a little more delicious.
